The cerebellum

What does the cerebellum do?

The cerebellum is at the back of the brain below the cerebrum. It is a lot smaller than the cerebrum, but is a very important part of the brain.

The cerebellum is connected to the brain stem, which in turn runs into the spinal cord.

The cerebellum controls balance, movement and coordination. Thanks to your cerebellum you can stand upright, keep your balance and move around.

How will a tumour in the cerebellum affect me?

If your tumour causes damage to your cerebellum, you will still be able to move but you may feel quite unsteady on your feet or clumsy. You may find walking a bit more difficult than usual or you may have slurred speech or a hand tremor.

Your doctor might test how well your cerebellum is functioning by asking you to do certain hand movements or testing how well you can balance on your feet.
