Support Groups

Ipswich Support Group 2 November 2009
Brain Tumour UK and Meningioma UK are holding a support group taster event from 12-2pm on Monday 2 November at Ipswich Hospital.

This relaxed and friendly drop-in event aims to find out what kind of support people who have been affected by a brain tumour would like to see in Ipswich and the surrounding areas.

"It's essential that our support groups meet people’s needs and expectations," explains Ella Pybus, Brain Tumour UK East Support Organiser and co-founder of Meningioma UK. Ella who lives in Suffolk wants to see more and better support for brain tumour patients: "This informal get-together will help us understand what local patients and carers want.

"We are excited about starting a new patient/carer support group, making Ipswich our third patient group in East Anglia after Cambridge and Norwich. We are also hoping that people who are interested in helping to run this support group will come forward. We provide training and support, of course. Groups are most successful when they are run by well-organised and sensitive volunteers with a long-term commitment to helping local people affected by brain tumours."

Brain Tumour UK and Meningioma UK have the support and backing of the neuroscience team at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, the main treatment centre in the eastern counties for brain tumour patients. "Support groups ensure that people do not feel alone and can significantly improve the quality of life of both patients and their carers," explains Moira Dennison, Head of Support at Brain Tumour UK.

Please let us know if you can attend by calling Louise Smith, Cancer Information Specialist Nurse, on 01473 715748, or Ella Pybus on 01787 374084. The event takes place at the John Levay Cancer Information Centre, Entrance 15, Ipswich Hospital, Heath Road, Ipswich, IP4 5PD.

You don’t have to stay for the whole two hours – come along at a time that suits you.

  • For anyone unable to attend, Brain Tumour UK's helpline is available from 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm Monday to Friday on 0845 4500 386 or email support@braintumouruk.org.uk

More support groups…

Many groups offer support throughout the UK and Ireland . They meet regularly to provide advice and friendship to those living with a brain tumour and/or their carers. Some focus on particular needs, such as low grade glioma tumours and meningioma tumours.

Attending a group is a great way to meet others in a similar situation, to exchange information and experiences, to offer and receive support and to build confidence. Some groups are run by a patient or a carer others may be facilitated or attended by a health care professional. Download a list of Brain Tumour Support Groups or contact us for information.

If you would find it difficult to attend a group, you can still find someone to talk to through our Phone Pals service.
