Our key activities

Our work focuses on three key areas:

Providing support

Our support services are available to anyone affected by a brain tumour.

We provide personalised support:

We also provide financial support through our Denny Care and Relief Fund.

Our information

Our information is not a substitute for medical advice that you’ll need from your healthcare team. But it will support you to help you understand what’s happening, to make choices and to ask the right questions regarding brain tumour.

We work with healthcare professionals, to make our information accurate. We review our information regularly, to keep it up to date. And we follow guidance from the Plain English Campaign on avoiding jargon wherever we can.

Our helpline

We are a member of the Helplines Association and meet its good practice principles for helplines. Whether you are a member of the public or a professional who wishes to refer a client, it's crucial that you find a service which is available, appropriate and of good quality.

Our membership of the Helplines Association provides extra assurance that our helpline is a confidential, non-profit service, with staff who are trained and supported.

Funding research

With the support of thousands of generous donors and fundraisers, Brain Tumour UK funds world-class scientific research to improve the quality of life for brain tumour patients, identify better treatments and, ultimately, defeat the disease.

Our growing research programme aims to help everyone affected by a brain tumour. It includes research into:

  • childhood brain tumours;
  • high grade brain tumours;
  • low grade brain tumours;
  • benign brain tumours; and
  • the rehabilitation and care of anyone affected by a brain tumour.

Recent examples of our research investment include:

  • a commitment to raising £500,000 to drive research in our Neuro-Oncology Research Centre at the University of Wolverhampton;
  • a new research nurse at University Hospital Birmingham;
  • a post-doctoral researcher in high grade gliomas at the University of Portsmouth; and
  • work by the University of Southampton to show how to improve the quality of life for children affected by brain tumours.

Raising awareness

Brain Tumour UK works closely with patients, carers, healthcare professionals, scientists and related organisations to raise awareness amongst key decision-makers, service providers and the wider public, to change things for the better for everyone affected by a brain tumour.

Our recent activities include:

  • highlighting that half of all brain tumours are not included in official statistics, and securing agreement to record all brain tumours in England;
  • providing evidence to the Health Select Committee on the inequalities faced by people with brain cancer;
  • giving evidence to the Royal Society of General Practitioners inquiry into neurological services at general hospitals; and
  • campaigning to improve access to end-of-life drugs and to ensure equality in access to healthcare.

If you are a patient or carer, you can support our awareness raising work by sharing your story with the full support of our communications team.
