Walk Around the World contributions for Brain Tumour UK
Our grateful thanks go to all who organised a walk or took part in one, who donated their miles to the IBTA initiative and so raised the profile of brain tumour care, and raised a significant sum to help us to achieve our aims.
The first walk of 2008 was held on 24 March. The Ed Evans Foundation organised ‘Walk the Vale’ in memory of Ed and in aid of Brain Tumour UK. 1,725 miles were walked by 220 people and more than £5,000 was raised in sponsorship. Watch out for this year’s walk on Easter Monday 2009.
During May the following walks took place:
- 25 year brain tumour survivor Peter Buller embarked on his 290 mile ‘Winding Wobble to Walsingham’ a journey from Glastonbury to Walsingham, raising £2,200 in celebration of life
- On 10 May Sarah and Kevin Curtis undertook the ‘Walk the Ridgeway 40’, walking 80 miles and raising over £1,000.
- On 11 May Maria Robinson organised ‘Step Forward for Brain Tumour UK’ at Pugneys Country Park, Wakefield – 130 people walked three miles – a total of 390 miles – in memory of Margaret Baldwin and £6,200 was raised in support.
- 25 May saw patient Caroline Crawford and her friend Angela do the Great Scottish Walk - a total of 12 miles were walked and around £600 raised.
- A day later, on 26 May, the annual Bridgnorth walk took place and a team led by Hilary Davies raised £3,000 walking 185 miles.
The summer arrived and during June, Michael Ioaniddes and a team of six walked the Three Peaks in memory of Amy Key where a total of 300 miles were walked and over £4,269 was raised. On 29 June Diana and Jeremy McNally organised the Jurassic Walkathon where a total of 343 miles were walked and £1,450 was donated to Brain Tumour UK. Sam Gluck and Rachel Jeffries, on an event for the Ed Evans Foundation, did The Three Peaks challenge and walked 100 miles, raising a further £1,606.
During early September, Carole Anne Grey walked a part of the Yorkshire Dales and completed 88 miles.
On 1 November a walk from Colchester to Great Bentley in Essex ‘Walking in memory of Hollie Bell’ was organised where young people turned up in fancy dress and walked 218 miles. £220.48 was collected on the day with further sponsorship on the way.
On the same day, Kiki Connor organised ‘The Iron Age Fort Walk’, in The Chilterns, Buckinghamshire. Approximately 60 people walked a total of 140 miles and raised £6,519 which included £739 of matched funding from BP.
Diane Purser from Colkirk decided to walk the Peddars Way in memory of her neighbour, John Steer. The 47 mile walk was completed in several stages over a few months by Diane and her friend, Reg, and between them they walked 94 miles and raised a total of £2,000.
Chris Hewitt completed 18 miles doing the Cardigan Walk in memory of Janet Hewitt and raised £212.
Thanks to these walkers and many others, Brain Tumour UK supporters walked 4,298 miles and raised £34,276.48 … so far!
