Our challenge is to raise sufficient money to fund research into brain tumours, as well as offer a local support network to patients and their families. We also need to raise awareness of our organisation so that we are known to those who need us.
We are looking for volunteer Local Press Officers and Story Co-ordinators. This is a brand new role and ideally would suit someone who has worked in journalism or a similar career.
Key tasks
• To write and send out interesting reports of fundraising events arranged by Brain Tumour UK to local newspapers, and also press releases of the latest scientific breakthroughs to local and national newspapers
• To co-ordinate the stories told by brain tumour patients for publication in our in-house magazine and on our website
• To build up good relationships with local media and keep up-to-date contact details on a database
• The ability to take quality photographs of relevant events to submit to the media
• Maintain and keep files of articles submitted
Skills required
• An empathy and a commitment to what Brain Tumour UK is trying to achieve
• A good command of spoken and written English
• The ability to write good articles and report factually in the manner required by the newspaper industry and Brain Tumour UK
• A working knowledge and ability to use a digital camera and relevant IT skills
• An ability to work to deadlines
• Good interpersonal skills
Resources required
• Access to a telephone, digital camera and a computer with internet/email facilities.
• Working from home, but able to travel to local places to report on events
• An interest in finding out about current brain tumour research and core treatments
Time required
• Flexible time commitment
You will be supported by the Fundraising Team and Development Co-ordinators at Brain Tumour UK, together with other staff and line managers
All our volunteers are fully covered by our insurance whilst carrying out roles on our behalf and we offer out-of-pocket expenses. References will be taken up before you start your volunteering role, and Criminal Records Bureau checks are required for certain roles.
