Welcome

Annual Conference 14 and 15 July 2008
Book your place now!

Annual conferenceWe are delighted to announce that our Annual Brain Tumour Conference 2008 will be held this year at Edgbaston cricket ground, Birmingham on Monday 14 (afternoon) and all day Tuesday 15 July.

In light of the new venue, we are aiming for ‘a better innings for patients’ bringing together anyone concerned with enhancing the lives of people living with brain tumours, improving treatments and care, and finding a cure.

This event provides an opportunity for leading brain tumour professionals to speak on the latest advances in care, treatment and research and for them to talk to patients and carers on an informal basis.

At the same time it is an opportunity for brain tumour sufferers and Brain Tumour UK’s supporters and volunteers to meet each other, share experiences and become better informed. We very much hope that you will be able to come along.

Cancer Campaigning Group urges Government to fulfil cancer reform pledges

The Cancer Campaigning Group (CCG) – a coalition of the 40 leading cancer patient organisations in the UK, including Brain Tumour UK – is calling on the Government to fulfil its recent promises in the Cancer Reform Strategy.

Whilst the CCG supports and welcomes the Strategy as a blueprint for the delivery of cancer services in England, CCG members remain to be convinced that the NHS will be able to deliver on the strategy’s promises within this timeframe and with the limited resources available.

  A NICE result at last!

Temodal and Gliadel Wafers are finally available on the NHS as possible therapies following a two-year appraisal by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

If you are one of the 2,000 people diagnosed annually in the UK with a high-grade glioma, ask your GP and/or consultant if Temodal (temozolomide) and/or Gliadel Wafers (carmustine implants) are the right treatments for you. You will almost certainly be eligible for Temodal which can be administered with and after radiotherapy. Gliadel Wafers contain an anti-cancer drug and are inserted in the brain during surgery. NICE has recommended Gliadel Wafers for the treatment of newly-diagnosed high grade gliomas where 90% or more of the tumour is surgically removed.

“We are watching to ensure that these treatments are made available to everyone who needs them, when they need them,” says Jenny Baker, Brain Tumour UK’s Chief Executive. Copies of Carmustine implants and temozolomide for the treatment of newly diagnosed highgrade glioma are available to download or order printed copies of the leaflet from the NHS Response Line 0870 1555 455, quoting reference N1268.
