Our Events

Could you run an event for us?

Thinking of running an event? It can be very simple, it could be a challenge, and should be something which you enjoy doing.

The events that our supporters set up and run are many and varied, ranging from the imaginative to the straightforward to the frankly extreme!

To inspire you, we’ve included a piece on an annual fishing competition held at Midmar Stillwater Fishery in Aberdeenshire.

Contact Claire Glazebrook, our Head of Fundraising, if you’re planning something just a bit different or if you’d like some event ideas. To inspire you, here are two fun examples of a simple individual activity and a more organised group activity that made a welcome contribution to our funds and raised our spirits.

Giving for Lent

Taking up the good fight and putting down her diet coke, Steph Freeborough set an example to us all. She gave up her daily diet coke for Lent and gave the money to Brain Tumour UK instead. She also set up a Justgiving page to make it easy for her friends and family to donate too. We’re very grateful to Steph for her sacrifice and for coming up with such a simple but brilliant idea!

The Midmar Stillwater Fishery Charity Competition

Midmar stillwater fishery charity - everyone at the hut

Last September, 42 fly fishers took to the three lochs at Midmar Stillwater fishery in Aberdeenshire for the day to compete for the fishery’s ‘Charity Cup’, an annual event that in 2008 raised a grand total of £2,002 for Brain Tumour UK.

All enjoyed a ‘hog roast’ in the middle of the day and were well satisfied with having achieved such a sizeable fund between them. Fly-fisher Colin Henderson found extra sponsorship and boosted the funds considerably.

The cheque for £2,002 was presented by fishery owner Wayne Bilsborrow to Anna Saville on behalf of Brain Tumour UK. Anna is the future daughter-in-law of Wayne and Lorrie, and very sadly lost her father, Ted, to the disease in 2008. Ted, 63, from Bicknacre in Essex, although not a fly-fisher, was a keen angler himself and would have so enjoyed the day.

He and his wife Margaret had visited Midmar just before his diagnosis of a tumour in 2007. When he died, his family were keen to support a charity and raise awareness to help others affected as they had been by this terrible disease. Anna and Margaret spoke well in thanking the anglers for their support at the end of the day.
