Brain Tumour UK welcomes government commitments to cancer patients in Welfare Bill

Brain Tumour UK has welcomed assurances by the Welfare Minister, Lord Freud, that there will be restrictions on plans to ask cancer patients to make themselves available for work capability tests. 

Lord Freud has also said a presumption will be made that no time limit for employment and support allowance would be imposed on people being treated for cancer for at least six months or recovering from cancer for another year.

Jenny Baker, Brain Tumour UK Chief Executive, said: "This is a welcome respite from the Government’s previous track, which threatened to impact in the most negative way on the lives of cancer patients already struggling with the devastating effects of their diagnosis."

"There is a long way still to go though; we look forward to the full and prompt implementation of Lord Freud's assurances, in a way that gives clear, unequivocal guidance that will protect brain tumour patients."
